Saratoga Racecourse to offer free grandstand admission on opening day

Although New Yorkers already had plenty of reasons to visit historic Saratoga Racecourse during the summer, they will now have another. At least on opening day that is. The New York Racing Association (NYRA) stated today that the $3 grandstand admission fee will be waived on opening day July 23. The clubhouse fee of $5 will be reduced to $2 on opening day. This isn’t the only good news for Saratoga.

Pick 6 pools on Thursdays will now have a guaranteed pool of $100k. On days without carryovers last year the pool averaged just over $61k. If the pool does not reach $100k naturally then the NYRA will have to supplement the difference. This is great news for bettors that are going for the big score. I’m sure I will play the Pick 6 at Saratoga several times this year.

Perhaps the best news is that the late Pick 4 on Saturdays will have a guaranteed pool of $500k. I’m very glad to hear this because the races on the late Pick 4 at Sarotaga on Saturday are often full of stakes calibur horses. Regular followers of this website know I do my best handicapping in stakes quality races. I am what many would call a “stakes specialist”.

Concord Point wins Iowa Derby in huge weekend of racing at Prairie Meadows

Bob Baffert and Martin Garcia have hooked up to win yet another graded stakes event. This time it was the Grade 3 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows with Concord Point. Martin Garcia has had quite the hot hand lately and this race was no different. He stalked the early pacesetter and drew off to an easy 8 1/2 length win over Thiskyhasnolimit and Winslow Homer.

Concord Point broke the track record with a final time of 1:40.37 for the 8.5 furlongs distance. The son of Tapit easily bested the old time of 1:40.82 set in 2003 by Excessivepleasure.

Holy Bull Stakes winner Winslow Homer had a great trip behind the speed, but when asked for his best run he did not respond. He was classy enough to grab third place. Thiskyhasnolimit rallied for second place honors after winning the Matt Winn Stakes last out at Churchill Downs.

It looks like Concord Point really loved the extra distance and traditional dirt surface. This bodes well for his chances of making a splash in the Breeders Cup at Churchill Downs later this year. Look for Bob Baffert to campaign him masterfully until November.

The feature race of the day at Prairie Meadows was the Grade 2 Cornhusker Handicap and it was won by Shadowbdancing. The five-year-old son of Montbrook finished second in this race last year after setting the pace. This time he took a stalking position and it ended up in victory for jockey Eddie Razo Jr. Shadowbdancing won for the 10th time in 24 starts increasing his lifetime earnings $622,495.

Seeking The Title finally registered a break through win in the Iowa Oaks earlier in the card. She was piloted by jockey Calvin Borel. You may recall that she lost her jockey in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes a few months ago. Harissa was second.

Perhaps the most important horse to race at Prairie Meadows in terms of future potential this weekend was Majesticperfection. He won the Iowa Sprint Handicap EASILY on Friday night in 1:07.24 for six furlongs. Jockey Shaun Bridgmahon never asked him for his best run, but he threw a few crosses at the son of Harlan’s Holiday. Trainer Steve Asmussen has to be thinking Breeders Cup Sprint after that effort.

Zenyatta early favorite to repeat in Breeders Cup Classic

Zenyatta is favored to repeat in the Breeders Cup Classic according to an unscientific poll conducted by Gradedstakes.com. The daughter of Street Cry received 35% of the 140 votes. She recently improved her record to 17 wins from 17 starts while recording a narrow victory that may have been easier than it looked over the British mare St Trinians in the Vanity Handicap. She is being tentatively pointed to the Clement Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar for her next start.

Checking in second with 23.57% of the vote is Nick Zito’s Kentucky Derby runner up Ice Box. He was last seen finishing ninth in the Belmont Stakes. Zito said that the hot weather may have caused the son of Pulpit to perform poorly. The deep closer needs a fast pace to chase and if they burn it up in the Breeders Cup Classic he would be a serious threat. His next start hasn’t been determined.

Quality Road recorded the third highest amount of votes with 17.85% of all ballots. The son of Elusive Quality out of a Strawberry Road mare set brutal fractions and held on to win the Metropolitan Mile in a time of 1:33.11 seconds during his last race. Trainer Todd Pletcher likes to race him fresh and will wait for August 7 and the Whitney Handicap for his next start. I’d like to see him race more. His time in the Met Mile may have been even faster if he wasn’t running off the shelf. Despite that, its very hard to complain about a Grade 1 win under any circumstances. I just think Quality Road is immensely talented and capable of even more. The 10 furlongs distance of the Breeders Cup Classic will be the biggest question for him in November.

The fourth place finisher in the poll was Preakness Stakes winner Lookin At Lucky who garnered 10.7% of all votes. Bob Baffert is currently pointing him towards a start in the Haskell Invitational and then the Travers Stakes. ‘Lucky has a strong group of older horses to compete with this year, but he always bring his “A” game. The son of Smart Strike could be in the mix for the Breeders Cup Classic.

The fifth place finisher was the choice “Other” with 5.71%. This could include horses like Rachel Alexandra who recently got back on track with a powerful 10+ length win in the Fleur de Lis at Churchill Downs. Another horse not listed that could have an impact in the Breeders Cup Classic is Belmont Stakes runner up Fly Down. It looks like he is only now finding his best run. Another possibility is Musket Man although I think he is much more likely to compete in the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile.

Little to no confidence is being placed in Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver who got just 2.8% of all votes. I think he deserves more consideration. You have to remember that the Breeders Cup Classic will be contested at Churchill Downs. Super Saver loves the track. He also has the benefit of Calvin Borel aka the King of Churchill Downs. Don’t count Super Saver out based solely on his poor Preakness performance.

Checking in tied for 7th are Rail Trip and Blame. Both are very tough older horses. Blame was most recently seen easily taking the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs. He loves the track and that will play to his benefit in November. Trainer Albert Stall has always been high on the horse. I think if he continues to improve he will be the one to beat in the Breeders Cup Classic. If I had to take one horse today to win the ‘Classic it would be Blame.

Rail Trip is also a nice runner. He took the Hollywood Gold Cup last year and is trying to repeat this year. He scored an easy win in the Californian last out with new rider Rafael Bejarano. Will he handle the dirt? That is his biggest obstacle. He missed last years Breeders Cup Classic due to injury.

Belmont Stakes Picks & Plays

It feels like the Kentucky Derby was only yesterday, but the Test of Champions is finally upon us. The Belmont Stakes arguably requires the most stamina, jockey smarts, and determination of all the Triple Crown races.

Gradedstakes.com has had a great amount of success in the Belmont Stakes. We successfully picked Jazil ($14.40) to win the 2006 Belmont Stakes and hit the $92 exacta and the $436 trifecta.

We are ready to hit the race again in 2010. Will you join us? Belmont Stakes picks are available for just $5.99 and full card selections are available for $14.99!

Those who purchased our picks for the Preakness Stakes were rewarded when our top selection Lookin At Lucky ($6.80) won the race. We narrowly missed the trifecta when Jackson Bend failed to get second place. We plan to have not only the trifecta in the Belmont Stakes, but also the exacta and superfecta!

Regular visitors to this site know that we had Sidney’s Candy in all three of his wins this years. He paid $6.20 when he won the San Vicente and $9.60 in the San Felipe and Santa Anita Derby.

The 2010 Derby  trail was good to us. We had Caracortado when he won the Robert Lewis and paid $11. Our highest priced winner came in a less heralded race which was the Whirlaway Stakes. We touted Peppi Knows as our top selection. He won and returned $17.40 for a $2 win bet. We narrowly missed the Florida Derby with 29-1 shot Pleasant Prince who was defeated by a nose. He returned a hefty $26.40 to place!

Those winners are just a few among many. We plan to knock it out of the park in the Belmont Stakes. You can play along and reap the benefits. Below is a description of the packages we are offering this year.
