The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies is always an exciting race. My favorite winner of the race is Dreaming of Anna, a filly that won for trainer Wayne Catalano back in 2006. She went on to have a respectable career that included several more stakes victories. This year’s group look far superior to the fillies she faced. I expect the winner to emerge as quite a threat on not just the Kentucky Oaks scene, but the Kentucky Derby scene as well.
ALMOST AN ANGEL (Artie Schiller x Earthly Angel by Crafty Prospector) will likely scratch in favor of the Juvenile Sprint.
Trainer Richard Mandella has yet to determine if BEHOLDER (Henny Hughes x Leslie’s Lady by Tricky Creek) will go in this spot, or the Juvenile Sprint. If she races here she could find herself going as far as she can go on the lead. She is very talented, but the pedigree suggests shorter races will see her do her best work.
BROKEN SPELL (Broken Vow x Rich Find by Exploit) was crushed in both of her dirt starts at Churchill Downs. The D Wayne Lukas filly was last seen rallying from well back to be second in the Alcibiades on Keeneland’s Poly Track. She needs a fast pace to do her best work.
DREAMING OF JULIA (A.P. Indy x Dream Rush by Wild Rush) won her Saratoga debut like a good filly should; by 10 1/2 lengths. If racing fans thought that was good, then they must have really been wowed by her 16 1/4 length win in the Meadow Star Stakes over a good track at Belmont. She was then good enough to score the Frizette Stakes by a head. She’s got good racing experience leading to this Breeders’ Cup event and will have a heck of a chance to win.
The only horse in this race with a win over the track and distance is EXECUTIVEPRIVILEGE (First Samurai x Refugee by Unaccounted For). Trained by Bob Baffert, her record stands at a perfect 5 for 5. She has been good enough to score from on or off the pace and will likely have leading Santa Anita rider Rafael Bejarano in the irons.
KAUAI KATIE (Malibu Moon x More Than Pretty by More Than Ready) is the stablemate of Dreaming of Julia and will likely pass on this race in favor of the Juvenile Sprint. If she goes here, don’t discount her chances. She’s speedy and bred to thrive at the distance.
RENEE’S QUEEN (After Market x Mighty Renee by Maria’s Mon) scored a gutsy head win in Del Mar’s Juvenile Fillies Turf in her last start. The new Southern Equine connections have her doing well. It would be surprising to see her win, but she could help make the superfecta pay well.
SPRING IN THE AIR (Spring At Last x Unbridled Run by Unbridled’s Song) won the Alcibiades by a length after rallying from 10th in that Keeneland prep race. Before that the bay filly was second in the Natalma Stakes at Woodbine. She has yet to race on dirt, but her pedigree suggests it wont be a problem. Mark Casse is the trainer.
SWEET SHIRLEY MAE (Broken Vow x Joyful Chaos by Rahy) is trained by Wesley Ward and could go in the Juvenile Sprint. She looked good when rallying in the Spinster Stakes and figures to enjoy the extra distance. She will be coming late and could help make the trifecta pay handsomely.
