Ken Ramsey will try to secure a third starter (in addition to We Miss Artie & Vicar’s In Trouble) for the May 3 Kentucky Derby when homebred Bobby’s Kitten competes as the 3-1 favorite in Keeneland’s Blue Grass Stakes.
Named for the late, great Bobby Frankel, Bobby’s Kitten has raced exclusively on turf until now.
His best efforts include a 6-1/4 length win in the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont Park as well as a third place finish in last year’s Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
If Bobby’s Kitten were an engine, he would be a V8. His natural speed is brilliant and among the best of this three-year-old crop.
Jockey JJ Castellano will take Bobby’s Kitten to the lead and if past efforts are any indication, he is going to be very tough to run by in the stretch.
If he is to race in the Kentucky Derby after this, a first or second place finish is required.
Otherwise, the son of Kitten’s Joy will not earn enough points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby to qualify for a spot in the starting gate.
I haven’t got a chance to check the past performances for this race just yet, but check back later tonight for an in depth analysis of the 2014 Blue Grass Stakes and all of its Kentucky Derby contenders.
