Conduit ran 4th in the Arc and then took the BC. Summer Bird has been awesome, I am excited that he might be the second of our horses to win this. Nice on his resume, good advertising to Japanese breeders looking for more stallions for Sunday Silence mares. If he wins, he will have already done enough. Next year would be icing on the cake.

I see your point, but I think its worth taking the chance. $2.8M is a lot of money, and it would be a nice selling point when he goes to stud. As far as being a rival for Rachel Alexandra he would have to improve immensely from this point in my opinion. She absolutely crushed him in the Haskell, and she will likely improve in 2010.

Thanks for the article on Summer Bird in the Japan Cup Dirt. I had to point out a glaring mistake you made about Summer Bird's finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic: he did not finish in 5th; Summer Bird came in 4th place, the same as Curlin last year.

Ryan,

Don't you think the Japan Cup Dirt is asking too much of SUMMER BIRD? While he's a classy dude, he's got to overcome a lot of obstacles that you recapped.

I remember when LAVA MAN was sent to Japan, the track was so deep and sandy he tore the frogs clear off. While he obviously carries the American hopes, I believe he needs this race/trip like he needs a hole in his head. This could set him back for 6 months and he may not come back the same colt he was this year. What a shame for New York, Florida, and Kentucky fans who could have enjoyed him all of next year.

With normal 4y.o. maturity, he'd be a terrific rival for RACHEL in the Classic and for HOY. In fact, SUMMER BIRD probably hasn't shown his best, while RACHEL may have already run her best race.
