The Prioress Stakes will take place at Belmont Park over the distance of six furlongs for three-year-old fillies. They will vie for the winners share of the $250,000 purse and a coveted Grade 1 victory. This race is usually good and last year’s winner Franny Freud was dynamite. The 2011 edition of the race features a strong group. Let’s take a look.
Her Smile (Include x Hepburn by Capote) This 10-1 shot hails from the Todd Pletcher barn and deserves respect because of that. Her best effort came three back when she was a good second in the Comely. I’m going to look elsewhere, but it is never wise to count Pletcher out. JJ Castellano will ride.
Roman Treasure (Roman Ruler x Jeanne Jones by Nijinsky II) Ramon Dominguez gets a leg up on this filly for the second time after winning the Ms Royal Stakes last out. The speedster will have plenty of company up front, but the Michael Hushion trainee may be able to handle the heat. I’ll go elsewhere at 5-2, but she certainly has merits.
Our Year (Grand Slam x Secret Crush by Boston Harbor) Couldn’t have won any easier in a wire to wire score at Monmouth last out. Based on that race the 6-1 shot should be feared. Elvis Trujillo gets back up for trainer Timothy Hills.
Quantum Miss (Smoke Glacken x Quanah County by Valid Expectations) When people say speed to spare, they are talking about this filly. She won against Pennsylvania breds by 12 last out and 16 when trying them last year. She has been solid against open company with a win in the Cicada, but with a torrid pace anticipated she might be in trouble. I can’t like her at 3-1.
Alienation (Rock Hard Ten x Alienated by Gone West) Smashed an allowance field in her 2011 debut last out. Baffert opts to ship her to Belmont and that should tell everyone he is serious as a heart attack about winning this race. As a two-year-old she was second in the Adirondack and Spinaway. My gut tells me she is much better this year which is scary. She’s a slam dunk at 3-1 and my top pick. John Velazquez will ride.
Pomeroy’s Pistol (Pomeroy x Prettyatthetable by Point Given) Looked wonderful winning a minor stakes race at Monmouth last out. That win verified her win in the Davona Dale earlier this year. She will sit off the pace which will benefit it her in this spot. Dangerous at 4-1 for trainer Amy Tarrant and jockey Cornelio Velasquez.
The Prioress is going to be quite the race as it is LOADED with speed. I really believe my top pick Alienation will be able to sit under Johnny V and move when he pushes the button. I’ll be playing her hard at 3-1. I encourage you to head over to Twin Spires to bet her online too. You can do so by clicking the link in the preceding sentence or the banner above.
