Havre de Grace could be mortal against males in the Woodward

The Woodward Stakes provided an awe inspiring race two years ago when Rachel Alexandra became the only filly to ever hit the wire first.

Now, Havre de Grace (Saint Liam x Easter Bunnette by Carson City) will try to become the second female in the 57 year history of the Woodward Stakes to enter the winner’s circle.

She won’t have it easy.

Yes, the filly is super quick. Yes, she blew away the field in the Apple Blossom, Azeri and Obeah. Yes, she provided a breath taking stretch duel at Delaware Park against archrival Blind Luck in the Delaware Handicap. Her figures match up too.

Despite that, taking on males will require all of her strength and speed.

Havre de Grace will face a field that includes horses that won the Florida Derby, Suburban Handicap, Donn Handicap and New Orleans Handicap among other important races. The field also includes runners that were second in the Kentucky Derby and Stephen Foster Handicap. Winning the Woodward will be much harder for the lass than her 8-5 morning line price indicates.

This is a race where I think you have to swing against the favorite. I’m going to make my top pick Giant Oak (Giant’s Causeway x Crafty Oak by Crafty Prospector). I’ve never been very wild about the horse, but he has come on strong of late. I love the way he ran into glacial fractions to grab third in the Whitney Handicap last out. If he gets some pace to chase he will be deadly. The price is wonderful at 8-1. Shaun Bridgmahon will pilot the veteran racehorse for trainer Chris Block.

After Giant Oak I also like Flat Out (Flatter x Cresta Lil by Cresta Rider). In fact, I’d say he has an equal chance if not a little better chance to win the race than my pick. Why didn’t I go with him? Well, 8-1 on Giant Oak is a lot more enticing than the 5-2 I can expect on Flat Out. Given I don’t think a whole lot separates them, it’s a no-brainer for me to take the horse with the much better price. Flat Out was last seen finishing up nicely in the Whitney to be second behind Tizway. Before that he blew the Suburban Handicap field off the track to win by 6 ½ lengths at odds of 14-1 as our top pick. He is sharp as a tack as you can tell by a :57 1/5 H work at Monmouth on August 18.

My price horse for the Woodward Stakes is Convocation (Pulpit x Shade Dancer by Nureyev). He ran well last out to take a third level allowance race at Saratoga by just over 3 lengths. Trainer James Jerkens has him here for a reason. The colt loves the track as proved by a record of 2 wins from 3 starts. He was fourth in this race last year, but figures to improve this time at a fat price of 20-1.

Plan to play our pick Giant Oak at a nice price of 8-1 or box him with our bomb Convication in the exacta at 20-1? We would appreciate if you did so at BetAmerica. 2011 Easy Goer Stakes betting preview

Wow, the $60k ungraded Easy Goer Stakes came up tough! Three of the five entrants are stakes winner while two are graded stakes winners. Let’s take a look at the entrants. Although the field is short, a strong opinion could lead to a good payoff given the competitiveness of the race.

Friend or Foe (Friends Lake x Unbridled Star by Unbridled)- I have always had a lot of faith in this horse and he was my top pick when finishing sixth in the Travers at odds of 24-1. Since then he won the Empire Classic by five lengths and finished fifth beaten three lengths in the Cigar Mile. The colt is a perfect 3 for 3 at Belmont Park and jockey Alex Solis can place him wherever he pleases. I’m projecting a fast pace so look for him to sit right behind the front runners.

Tahitian Warrior (Maria’s Mon x Chatique by Deputy Minister)- I bet this horse in his career debut where he scored by 4 3/4 lengths at odds of 7-1. He hasn’t been nearly that good of a price since, but he could provide value in the Easy Goer. He is a fresh horse and stretching out from 6.5 furlongs to 8.5 furlongs means he ought to be on the lead, but if not he will be very close. This is his first time going two turns which is something I don’t like. I find it incredible that they havent tried the turf with him yet given his strong breeding.Look for him to win next out.

Rail Trip (Jump Start x Sweet Trip by Carson City)- Winner of the Hollywood Gold Cup in 2009, he has missed a lot of time since finishing poorly in the Woodward Stakes last out. He is a winner of three races from four tries at the distance, two Grade 2 races. The works are very strong and he should be close to the front. Ramon Dominguez sees fit to ride this horse for Rick Dutrow. Rail Trip is a very, very live racehorse.

Mission Impazible (Unbridled’s Song x La Paz by Hold your Peace) Failed to fire last out in the Alysheba. Before that he finished first in the Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap at Fair Grounds. He should prompt the pace, but things could be too hot for him today. I question if he is up to running with the likes of these right now.

Convocation (Pulpit x Shade Dance by Nureyev)- Lagged behind a hot pace last out and picked up the pieces to be second in the Grade 3 West Chester. He has finished second 5 times in 7 attempts on this Belmont track. He wouldn’t be a shock, but I don’t think he is capable of winning this one. On the plus side, this race is third off the shelf which is always a strong angle.

I’ll take Friend or Foe as my top pick. He is the only horse that I believe could be going up whereas the rest may have seen their best races already. He could be in the perfect spot turning for home too. Rail Trip is a close second choice. If he reverts to the form that let him win the Hollywood Gold Cup he might jog here. Best of luck and check out our horse betting page for information on how to play the race.

Regal Ransom & I Want Revenge top Suburban Handicap

The Grade 2 Suburban Handicap contested over 9 furlongs on the dirt for three-year-olds and upward has quite a strong field for its 2010 edition. 2009 Wood Memorial winner I Want Revenge is back for his first start since scratching as the morning line favorite in the Kentucky Derby on the day of the race. Regal Ransom, winner of the Grade 2 Super Derby, is back for his first start since setting the pace and fading in the Breeders Cup Classic back in November. It could be another and perhaps sharper horse that wins the Suburban Handicap though.

Haynesfield scored his third consecutive win and seventh win from ten career starts last out in his 2010 debut. The son of Speightstown has excellent tactical speed. He went wire to wire in his last score against allowance optional claiming company, but when he won the Grade 3 Discovery Handicap before that he sat in second most of the way before taking over in the stretch.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Haynesfield is his ability to go a route of ground. He is two for two at the Suburban Handicap distance of 9 furlongs. Speightstown’s progeny are typically sprinters. Steve Asmussen and Ramon Dominguez are two of the best in racing at what they do. The top two in this race would be well advised not to ignore the New York bred Haynesfield. He holds a strong hand.

Racing for the first time since November won’t be a problem for Regal Ransom. He won first out going seven furlongs at Saratoga as a two-year-old. When he won the Super Derby he was racing for the first time in over four months. Not only has Regal Ransom shown the ability to run on rest in the past, but he is working up a storm. His last work was a :58 4/5 B five furlong move that was the second fastest from 23 works. Prior to that he worked six furlongs in 1:11 B and five furlongs in :58 2/5 B.

If the son of Distorted Humor is able to get loose on the lead he may gallop home. Don’t expect Ramon Dominguez and Haynesfield to let that happen though. Rick Dturow has entered the claimer Pictural to run on the lead with Regal Ransom as a rabbit. Regal Ransom may be classy enough to win even with a pressured pace. Alan Garcia rides for Bin Suror Saeed.

The fact that Joe Talamo saw fit to hop on a plane and pick up the mount on I Want Revenge is very encouraging. It may be that he is attached to the horse, but it may also be that I Want Revenge is ready to run a big race. Perhaps he is coming out of loyalty to IEAH. Regardless of why, I like that he will be here to pilot “his” colt. The son of Stephen Got Even is a perfect one for one at the distance of nine furlongs with his only race being a win with a troubled trip in the Wood Memorial.

I Want Revenge has more than enough speed to be forwardly placed, but he proved in the Wood that he also has the ability to close with a rush if that is needed. I expect Joe Talamo to take sit behind horses and make a move entering the stretch.  If I Want Revenge is ready to go he will be tough to hold off in the lane. Regardless of his performance in this race, if I Want Revenge can return to his 2009 form he will be a player in the older horse division.

Other contenders include Eldafeer and Convocation. The latter was last seen finishing fourth behind Quality Road in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Mile Handicap. I’m not sure he wants to go this far. Eldafeer was third with a wide trip last out in the Grade 2 Brooklyn Handicap. The gelded son of AP Indy could be an exotics factor, but I have a hard time believing he can win this race. Pictural and Unbridled Danger round out the field.
