Some of the best sires in horse racing can be found in the middle price range of $10,001-$25,000. Here you will find middle of the road type sires that aren’t as explosive at producing top racehorses as well as some of the “elite” sires, along newer sires that have great potential.
#1 Cape Blanco (Galileo x Laurel Delight by Presidium) It’s hard not to like a Group 1 winning son of the best sire in the world. Cape Blanco is the first son of Galileo to stand in North America. His record on the track includes wins in the Irish Derby, Irish Champion Stakes and a trio of American Grade 1 races highlighted by the Arlington Million. Given his stellar pedigree and even better race record, I have to love his chances of succeeding at $17.5k for Ashford Stud.
#2 Eskendereya (Giant’s Causeway x Aldeberan Light by Seattle Slew) He towered over every horse he faced at three and Todd Pletcher said he was “As good as horses get.” His win in the 2010 Wood Memorial was one of the most impressive races by a three-year-old in the history of thoroughbred horse racing. If not for an untimely injury he could have joined his broodmare sire as a winner of the Kentucky Derby and dare I say the Triple Crown. I’m valuing him entirely on what I think he can do rather than what he has done, but with a top notch pedigree and even better race record, Taylor Made Stallions could have the next elite sire standing for $25k.
#3 Tiz Wonderful (Tiznow x Evil by Hennessy) After winning back to back editions of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Tiznow has blossomed into one of the most popular sires in America. Tiz Wonderful had the potential to be like his daddy, but after an injury he wasn’t quite the same horse. Before that he showed immense talent by winning the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes and Grade 2 Jockey Club Stakes in his juvenile season. I’m extremely impressed by his babies that I’ve seen at the sales and so far the numbers back that up. He has had seven horses sell in the six figure price range. Contact Spendthrift Farm to breed to him for $12.5k.
#4 Roman Ruler (Fusaichi Pegasus x Silvery Swan by Silver Deputy) He has hit the stud scene with a bang, producing top runners like Delta Jackpot winner Rule and Belmont Stakes winner Ruler on Ice. Winner of the Haskell Invitational in 2005, he was also the leading second crop sire by earnings and second leading sire in the third crop listing by earnings. His pedigree speaks for itself as he is by a Kentucky Derby winner and out of a blue hen mare that also produced El Corredor and Maimonides. You cant go wrong with this sire that is likely to produce classic type runners. The Hill n’ Dale stud is the best value and surest bet on the list at $15k.
#5 Scat Daddy (Johannesburg x Love Style by Mr. Prospector) Winner of the Florida Derby in 2007, he was leading freshman sire last year behind the strength of horses like Finale and Daddy Long Legs. I love that he was a precocious juvenile and just as good or perhaps better in his sophomore campaign. The early results tell us he could be the “next big thing” at stud. I’d like to see his progeny perform better on dirt in the future, but for now, he is certainly on the radar as a top middle price range sire. You can find him at Ashford Stud for $17.5k.
Honorable Mentions: Gio Ponti ($20k @ Castleton Lyons), Fusaichi Pegasus ($15k @ Ashford Stud), Forestry ($12.5k @ Taylor Made Stallions).
