The 8.5 furlong Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes will be contested at Santa Anita for a purse of $300k on Saturday. Historically, the race has served as a great prep for the Santa Anita Derby and subsequently the Kentucky Derby. Pioneerof The Nile used the San Felipe as a springboard for his Santa Anita Derby win and runner up finish in the 2009 Kentucky Derby. Future Triple Crown winner Affirmed took the San Felipe in 1978 as did Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000 and Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Point Given in 2001.
Much of the focus will be on Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes winner Creative Cause (Giant’s Causeway x Dream of Summer by Siberian Summer). He was last seen on February 19 running a very even race to be third of four horses in the seven furlong Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes. Bettors should forgive that race as it was merely for the purpose of getting him out of the barn. He will be much sharper this time going around two turns. This race could really tell his story. Is he the same horse now that he was at two? I have doubts that he is. Mike Harrington trains and Joel Rosario is listed to ride.
Harrington will also send out Empire Way (Empire Maker x Delta Princess by AP Indy), a late developing full brother to Ladies Classic winner Royal Delta. He looked like a new horse when rallying to finish second in the Grade 2 Robert Lewis on February 4. It was his first time racing on dirt and he clearly likes the stuff. That’s no surprise given his breeding. I’ve been high on this colt since he broke his maiden and I look for a big effort here and next out in the Santa Anita Derby.
San Pedro Stakes winner Midnight Transfer (Hard Spun x French Satin by French Deputy) has been great sprinting, but going two turns could be a test for the Carla Gaines charge. He has more than enough pedigree to enjoy the stretch out, but he had better be loaded for bear to handle these foes; most have already done what he is trying for the first time.
Bodemeister (Empire Maker x Untouched Talent by Storm Cat) turned many heads with a second out victory against maiden. He won by about as far I can throw a rock and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 101 in the process. He could be any kind and this will be his acid test. Stablemate Liaison (Indian Charlie x Galloping Gal by Victory Gallop) clipped heels before falling last out in the Robert Lewis. Luckily, he came out of the race A-OK. Now the CashCall Futurity winner will look to pick up where he left off; winning races. Bob Baffert has won this race four times previously.
Owners Jerry and Ann Moss have had great success in the San Felipe. They finished second in 2005 with Giacomo before springing a Kentucky Derby upset in May. This year, they bring the gelding Blingo (Artie Schiller x Wassifa by Sure Blade). An impressive first out maiden winner, he hasn’t raced since finishing sixth in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity. Trainer John Sheriffs says he is a much more mature horse at three and might have turned the corner mentally. Despite that, he has a pedigree loaded with turf influences. I’m going to have to see him perform well no dirt before backing him with my hard earned money.
This Kentucky Derby prep promises to be one of the best so far. It’s refreshing to see good colts and geldings compete on the west coast. They havent been so great in the last two years, but the overall trend says they have a great chance to impact the Triple Crown when all is said and done. There can only be one San Felipe winner, but we should keep an eye on some of the others too. I have a feeling we will hear from them as well. After all, Giacomo exited this race a loser, but was a winner in the Kentucky Derby.
